For some people, namely the ones who couldn’t abide by the fix-on-a-fix crudeness of the original, that’s probably a good thing. For others, that rough charm was what made them fall in love with arguably Land Rover’s most iconic shape. When asked for confirmation as to whether this was indeed the new Defender, Land Rover’s representatives said only, “Land Rover is aware of an unofficial image in circulation. Through the development of any new vehicle many design options are considered. We will not comment any further at this time.”Land Rover is planning on giving the world its first real look at the new Defender at the Frankfurt motor show this September. Second Attack on Store Owner Raises Security Questions

first_imgAfter more than 20 years in business, owners of the One Hour Valet at Mondawmin Mall in West Baltimore, are strongly considering closing their doors, after a second attack in less than a year. The incident has other merchants at the mall questioning management’s commitment to their security. On July 11, around 6 p.m., Kyeong Lee, 60 says an individual jumped over the counter of her family’s dry cleaners located on the first floor of Mondawmin Mall. Fortunately, Lee was able to run to the front of the store, screaming, which apparently startled the potential robber and he fled. But, Lee was not so fortunate less than a year ago, when she says she believes the same person attacked her August 15, 2016.Mondawmin Mall in West BaltimoreAccording to Lee’s daughter Julie, her mother was punched in the head by the assailant causing a concussion, tied to a chair and choked her from behind while he demanded cash. He didn’t get money, but he allegedly stole Lee’s cell phone before fleeing the store. According to Julie Lee, the assailant manged to avoid video cameras and security guards on both occasions.“When my mother approached a mall security guard and grabbed him, his response to her was, `Get off my belt.’ They are not doing their job properly,” Julie Lee told the AFRO. She says the two incidents have shaken her mother badly. “It’s torture mentally, she just can’t handle it. Not knowing what’s going to happen is eating her alive,” Lee said.According to Julie Lee, Detective Green of the Baltimore Police Department provided satisfactory service during the first incident when her mother was assaulted in August 2016. However, Lee claims a member of BPD she identifies as Officer Krauss was less diligent in his investigation. He allegedly offered the Lees some advice to dissuade future assailants, `Get a dog,’ is what Julie Lees says the officer told her as well as her parents.Mondawmin Mall, the flash point of the Baltimore uprising in April 2015, following the death of Freddie Gray, is one of the oldest malls in America (it opened in 1956). Mall management would not respond to a request to be interviewed for this story, saying they could not comment on the incident involving Lee or the Mall’s security operations. However, other merchants have had questions about mall security since clashes between police and students erupted during the uprising. While reporting on this story, a security guard stopped by Lee’s establishment to check on her, and said he was ordered to increase the frequency of foot patrols in front of the store and others since the incident earlier this month.“What is a foot patrol every 10 minutes going to do?” exclaimed a business owner near One Hour Valet, who did not wish to be identified.  “That is the problem, whenever you need security, they are not there.  The people who come to rob you or shoplift, they know how security works.  They just wait until security has moved to another area,” the merchant added.“There should be security guards at the doors of our shops all the time,” said another business owner who did not want to be identified. “People who come honestly to shop will not be offended,” said the merchant.  “Traffic at the mall has not really picked up since the Freddie Gray incident. My shop is for established adults.  Many who came here before Freddie Gray, simply don’t come out to Mondawmin Mall anymore.”Local residents have divided views on Mondawmin.  Some young people like Gywnn Oaks resident Shaira Graham still supports the mall.“I feel like the mall is doing the best that they can. I like the fact that they are having community functions that attract the public,” she said. “That’s what brings the people together. They are opening up new stores and if they weren’t getting people out to shop, they’d be closed,” she added.Another Mondawmin merchant who has been operating for more than 20 years, says she doesn’t really see any major change in the mall’s atmosphere after the unrest. “It’s always been this way,” said the merchant, who also did not want to be identified.  “Things are happening here all the time…fights can break out at any time , robberies happen too often here. I see a different generation, doing the same stuff.”last_img

Education dept to bid farewell to waiting lists adopt online declaration of

first_imgKolkata: The state Education department is all set to introduce online procedure for declaration of vacancies and will also do away with the existing system of publication of waiting list.”We have gone through all School Service Commission (SSC) related documents. We are ushering in change in the SSC rules with the aim to have more transparency in the system. The schools would upload their vacancies online and the School Education department would allot teachers accordingly. This system would do away with the role of district inspectors, who presently forward the schools’ vacancy lists to the department,” said state Education minister Partha Chatterjee at the state Assembly, after placing the Budget for School Education and Higher Education department for 2019-20. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataDuring his budget speech, Chatterjee said that his department has proposed a revision in the rules of SSC and Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) for transparency and fast-tracking of teachers’ recruitment. Chatterjee said in the Assembly that if things go as per plans, the rules will come into effect before the next SSC examination. The proposed revised SSC rule has been sent for Cabinet approval and is expected to be introduced from the next examination onwards. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateAccording to the minister, the selection of candidates would be carried out through the process of elimination and the department would publish only the list of selected candidates. “There is no reason for publishing any waiting list,” he told reporters in his chamber later. For a vacancy of 10 teaching posts, the merit list would now include the names of exactly 10 candidates. At present, the names of 14 candidates are published against 10 vacant posts. The minister maintained that his department has already rationalised the teacher-student ratio in Dooars and in three remote islands in Sunderbans. “We will also give protection to in-service teachers,” he added. Chatterjee pointed out that in 2011, there were 1,09,794 primary teachers and in 2019, the figure has gone up to 2,16,381. In the upper primary level, there were 1,16,051 teachers in 2011 and in 2019, there are 1,13,936 teachers, while another 14,000 will be recruited soon. He further said that guest lecturers will get weightage in the College Service Commission examination, if they are eligible under the UGC norms. There are 2,500 guest lecturers that have been recruited by the managing committees of colleges without the state government’s permission. Out of these guest lecturers, 40 percent qualify the UGC eligibility norms.last_img read more

Kubeflow 03 released with simpler setup and improved machine learning development

first_imgEarly this week, the Kubeflow project launched its latest version- Kubeflow 0.3, just 3 months after version 0.2 was out. This release comes with easier deployment and customization of components along with better multi-framework support. Kubeflow is the machine learning toolkit for Kubernetes. It is an open source project dedicated to making deployments of machine learning (ML) workflows on Kubernetes simple, portable and scalable. Users are provided with a easy to use ML stack anywhere that Kubernetes is already running, and this stack can self configure based on the cluster it deploys into. Features of Kubeflow 0.3 1. Declarative and Extensible Deployment Kubeflow 0.3 comes with a deployment command line script; kfctl.sh. This tool allows consistent configuration and deployment of Kubernetes resources and non-K8s resources (e.g. clusters, filesystems, etc. Minikube deployment provides a single command shell script based deployment. Users can also use MicroK8s to easily run Kubeflow on their laptop. 2. Better Inference Capabilities Version 0.3 makes it possible to do batch inference with GPUs (but non distributed) for TensorFlow using Apache Beam.  Batch and streaming data processing jobs that run on a variety of execution engines can be easily written with Apache Beam. Running TFServing in production is now easier because of the Liveness probe added and using fluentd to log request and responses to enable model retraining. It also takes advantage of the NVIDIA TensorRT Inference Server to offer more options for online prediction using both CPUs and GPUs. This Server is a containerized, production-ready AI inference server which maximizes utilization of GPU servers. It does this by running multiple models concurrently on the GPU and supports all the top AI frameworks. 3. Hyperparameter tuning Kubeflow 0.3 introduces a new K8s custom controller, StudyJob, which allows a hyperparameter search to be defined using YAML thus making it easy to use hyperparameter tuning without writing any code. 4. Miscellaneous updates The upgrade includes a release of a K8s custom controller for Chainer (docs). Cisco has created a v1alpha2 API for PyTorch that brings parity and consistency with the TFJob operator. It is easier to handle production workloads for PyTorch and TFJob because of the new features added to them. There is also support provided for gang-scheduling using Kube Arbitrator to avoid stranding resources and deadlocking in clusters under heavy load. The 0.3 Kubeflow Jupyter images ship with TF Data-Validation. TF Data-Validation is a library used to explore and validate machine learning data. You can check the examples added by the team to understand how to leverage Kubeflow. The XGBoost example indicates how to use non-DL frameworks with Kubeflow The object detection example illustrates leveraging GPUs for online and batch inference. The financial time series prediction example shows how to leverage Kubeflow for time series analysis The team has said that the next major release:  0.4, will be coming by the end of this year. They will focus on ease of use to perform common ML tasks without having to learn Kubernetes. They also plan to make it easier to track models by providing a simple API and database for tracking models. Finally, they intend to upgrade the PyTorch and TFJob operators to beta. For a complete list of updates, visit the 0.3 Change Log on GitHub.
