Alphas Turns Over 96-Bed Ebola Treatment Unit to Gov’t

first_imgResponding to the growing demand for more space to accommodate Ebola patients, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority have turned over a 96-bed Ebola Treatment Unit (ETU) to the Government through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.The Center is located adjacent the Unity Conference Center off the Hotel Africa road in lower Virginia.Giving an overview of the project yesterday, the Managing Director of the National Port Authority and sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Madam Matilda W. Parker said the initiative was the two organizations’  way of contributing to government’s efforts in the Ebola fight.She told President Sirleaf, “we heard your voice, we heard the voice of Liberians at a time when they needed more treatment centers for Ebola patients.” The NPA managing director disclosed that the ETU contained 26 bathrooms and showers built for patients and others who will be visiting their loved ones there.“We want to say as Alphas we don’t implement and walk away,” Madam Parker said revealing that the two organizations had negotiated for three months medical supplies for the facility, due to arrive in November.In addition to that, she said special packages will be given to Ebola survivors who will be walking out of the center Ebola free.The NPA boss lauded Americare, APM Terminal, Environmental Protection Agency, General Service Agency and others who supported the construction of the center.Speaking earlier, the president of Alpha Phi Alpha Fratenity, Inc and Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), T. Nelson Williams, told the gathering that early in August the Liberian leader, consistent with the obligation of her office, sounded the battle cry against the invading Ebola virus disease, and declared the state of national emergency.The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. promptly responded, he said.According to Mr. Williams, they have sent an SOS call to international organizations based in the United States, requesting medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for distribution to medical facilities in Ebola affected areas in the country.As the result of their appeal, the LPRC boss disclosed that a 40-feet container with assorted medical supplies, valued at US$600, 000 will arrive in the country soon.Mr. Williams said the supplies will be given to medical facilities and health workers around the country.  He acknowledged that the projects were funded by members of the two organizations, business partners and friends of Alpha.He told his colleagues, “We must continue to fight this war against Ebola until Liberia is declared Ebola free.”Turing the center over to the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Madam Parker and President Sirleaf urged the ministry to continue the fight against Ebola.Meanwhile, the Assistant Minister for health and preventive service, Tolbert Nyenswah thanked the organization and promised that their contribution will be used for its intended purpose.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
