Touch Football Australia’s Victorian Branch has been awarded the Supporting Grassroots Sport Grant, worth $40,000 over two years from the Victorian State Government. The grant will benefit the development of Touch Football in Victorian regional areas. $1.5 million has been allocated by the Victorian Government from the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Budget for regional and rural sport. TFA Victoria will use the funds from its grant to employ a part-time regional Game Development Officer to manage a specific area. The new position will be responsible for the development of Touch Football in the region through schools, current affiliates, establishing new affiliates, encouraging the development of referees and coaches, and maintaining facilities. TFAVictoria State Branch Manager David Brady said two regions are currently being considered. “Both have good potential for growth for two years. We’re just finalising partnership arrangements,” Mr. Brady said.Game Development Officer Carly Goodrich played a pivotal role in securing the grant.Ms. Goodrich believes that the grant will be of great benefit to Touch Football throughout regional Victoria and outer-metropolitan Melbourne. “It will be a big support because at the moment we’ve got a lot of volunteers doing work in that location. The volunteers will now be able to access resources from the State Branch office to assist them,” she said. The new TFA Victoria Regional Game Development Officer will be based in the specified area and employed locally, which will support the community. The level of service to the developing regions of the State is sure to be improved by the location of the GDO in the rural locality.“If our staff live in metropolitan Melbourne, it is difficult to get to a country affiliate so we might go out there only three or four times a year. But if we’ve got someone centred there in that area for the whole time then we would expect to get a lot of growth participant wise,” Goodrich said. The opportunity for the promotion of Touch Football to country areas is one of the key reasons that the grant was awarded.Sport and Recreation Victoria Project Officer Tom Forsell said the more regional participation, the better. “Currently Touch Football is predominantly Melbourne-based but having someone that can go and deliver sessions in the country, whether it’s school-based stuff or club-school links, will really improve the ability of the organisation to start getting more country kids playing. All the projects that we fund are looking at increasing the participation rate and giving people more of a choice,” Forsell said.TFA Victoria has been extremely proactive in seeking funding in numerous areas, and Branch Manager David Brady is confident that two more key project grants will be awarded soon.“With the extra funding from the State Government, and with several other grants in the pipeline, we will be in a position to access extra staffing support from the parent body. What we’re trying to do is to pool our resources in the right direction. We have experienced quite a substantial growth, as evidenced by our Schools Championships, and the number of affiliates that come on board. We’ve had two new affiliates in the last financial year, which is fantastic. We have had a lot of new enquiries about the sport and the game so we are on our way to establishing our niche in the Victorian sporting landscape for the future,” Brady said. The first grant Touch Victoria is awaiting notification on is a Participation In Community Sport and Active Recreation (PICSAR), State and Regional grant, funded by VicHealth. VicHealth’s charter is to ‘build opportunities for people to be informed, learn new skills, have greater access to activities that promote good health, and share healthier environments’.The sport of Touch Football seems a perfect fit for this criteria. The second grant is part of the Victorian Government’s Future Directions Project, which is also funded through the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games Budget. These two grants would help TFA Victoria fund Touch Football in the other identified regional area as well as continue the expansion of the sport in metropolitan Melbourne. Nick Mooney, TFA Victoria Operations Manager is in the process of formalising the strategic and development plans to drive the game forward amongst juniors and in new affiliates in Victoria. The grants are a sign of the increasing recognition of Touch Football as a sport of choice for Victorians.Australian football is still the dominant code in Australia’s south east corner, with 300,000 Victorians currently playing the game, however Touch Football is promoted as a complement to the game, rather than a competition. Touch Football is predominantly a summer sport in Victoria and affiliates are establishing strong links with Australian football clubs. “We find that it’s a good cross-training sport for a lot of football players to keep fit in summer,” David Brady said. With the increased support from the Government and continued partnerships with other sports, Touch Football in Victoria is going from strength to strength.
Real Madrid captain Ramos open to playing for Spain in Olympicsby Carlos Volcano15 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveReal Madrid captain Sergio Ramos admits he’d be open to playing for Spain in the 2020 Olympics.Spain have never usually opted for such veteran players to make up their Olympic squads, but this seems to be something Ramos is really keen on.El Mundo reports that this would be a dream for the centre-back.”If the chance to go to Tokyo comes up, it would be tremendously exciting for him,” is the view of those close to the player.Spain have already qualified thanks to the Under-21s’ performances at this summer’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship and each competing nation is permitted to include three over-23s in their Olympic squad. BOSTON – Fidget spinners, a plastic Wonder Woman battle sword and a remote-controlled Spider-Man drone are among the toys topping a consumer safety group’s annual list of worst toys for the holidays.World Against Toys Causing Harm, or WATCH, unveiled the top 10 list Tuesday at a Boston children’s hospital. The non-profit organization has been releasing the lists for more than four decades.WATCH claims fidget spinners contain small parts that can be a choking hazard, Mattel’s Wonder Woman sword has the potential to cause blunt-force injuries and Marvel’s Spider-Man drone has multiple rotating blades that can lead to eye and other bodily injuries. The Toy Association, an industry trade group, dismissed the list as “needlessly frightening” to parents because all toys sold in the U.S. meet “rigorous” safety standards. It also criticized the organization for not testing the toys it focuses on.National toy safety standards are “inadequate,” as can been seen by the high number of recalls each year, WATCH President Joan Siff said. The non-profit says there have been at least 15 recalls representing nearly 2 million units of dangerous toys since December.Siff stressed the toys named each year have common hazards that the group sees year after year. She pointed to the “Pull Along Pony” by Tolo Toys that’s marketed for children over age 1 but has a 19-inch cord.“We don’t need a testing lab to know that’s a strangulation and entanglement hazard,” she said. With consumers increasingly doing their holiday shopping online, it’s more important than ever to have the most current information about the safety of a toy online, Siff said. For example, Hallmark’s Disney-themed “Itty Bittys” plush stacking toy for babies was recalled over the summer due to fabric pieces that posed a choking hazard. But the toy still is readily available online because many web sales are rarely monitored for recalls, Siff noted.Among the other toys that made this year’s list is Nerf’s “Zombie Strike” crossbow, which the organization says poses the risk of eye and face injuries because it uses a pressurized, pull back lever to shoot soft projectiles.Razor’s “Heel Wheels” are strapped onto children’s shoes to turn them into improvised roller skates but pose a burn risk because they include “real sparking action.”And “Slackline” is a tightrope-like device by Brand 44 meant to be anchored between two trees that WATCH says can lead to severe injury and death.
A “say hey” to Ohio State’s outfielder Dee Dee Hillman might mean more than just a greeting.Hillman compares her softball prowess to Major League legend Willie Mays.“We have the same mentality that wherever the ball is hit, I’m going to get it,” Hillman said. “That is my outfield mentality. I love to make the plays that seem to be impossible. I love the challenge.”Not only can Hillman play defense like Mays, making only one error this year, but she hits like him as well.In a two-week span from April 21 to May 2, Hillman had a .524 batting average from the leadoff position. The team went 7-1 during this stretch, including a split series over the No. 2 team in the country, Michigan.Batting first in Ohio State’s lineup is an important role, which she considers an honor.“It’s my responsibility to get everybody off to a good start and set a good tone,” Hillman said. “I think it’s my job to break the ice.”Coach Linda Kalafatis has simple expectations for her leadoff hitter when she approaches the plate.“Get on base and challenge the defense,” Kalafatis said. Hillman’s role as the leadoff hitter is enhanced because of her ability to put the ball in play. She has only struck out 12 times all season.“It comes down to being relentless and knowing that (the pitcher) is not going to get me out,” Hillman said.Though Kalafatis has simple expectations, Hillman has had to work hard to fulfill her coach’s wishes.“I know I have been putting a lot of extra work in and all the extra swings in the (batting) cages is really starting to pay off,” Hillman said.Hillman’s work ethic spotlights her versatility. She is the only player listed on the roster as a switch hitter. “I switched over from a righty hitter to a lefty when I was about 14 and it has its advantages,” Hillman said. “The fact that you are two steps closer to first base is really huge. Another advantage is that you can mis-hit and still beat it out.”As the junior’s confidence has been increasing with every game, she has made big strides compared to last year.In 2009, Hillman hit .297, whereas this season she is second on the team with a .361 batting average. Her big strides are evident in the batter’s box, but much shorter on the base paths. Hillman led the team last year with 17 stolen bases. This season, she only has five. One reason Hillman has not been able to “run like Mays” is because of a lingering hamstring injury, but her coach believes there is a bit more strategy to worry about.“We don’t want to open up first base and invite teams to walk Sam Marder,” Kalafatis said. “We don’t want to open the base up.”As the regional tournament approaches, Hillman is already looking to change up her game for next year.“As I am getting older, other teams start to know you a little bit better and start to scout you more.” Hillman said. “So, if it comes to bunting or just working more on power-slapping to hit it more in the gaps, I’ll do whatever.”In the end, Kalafatis is aware of Hillman’s big goal.“She wants to be an All-American,” Kalafatis said.
Real Madrid manager Santiago Solari backed the struggling Marcelo and insisted he’s a “Madridista through and through”.The Brazil international has struggled to hold on to his left-back position at Real this season following Sergio Reguilon’s strong performances. This has restricted Marcelo to just 12 appearances in La Liga this season, which has renewed talk of a possible summer transfer to Juventus to reunite with his good friend Cristiano Ronaldo. The 30-year-old did start though in Real’s first leg 1-1 draw against Barcelona in their Copa del Rey semi-final tie and helped them secure a valuable away goal.“Our second captain is a Madridista through and through, he always puts Real Madrid first and we work to give our all,” said Solari on the club website.Meanwhile, Marcelo’s fellow Brazilian Vinicius Junior continues to shine at Real after another impressive performance in his Clasico debut on Wednesday night. The 18-year-old kept Gareth Bale benched and repaid Solari’s faith in him by tormenting the Barcelona defence throughout the game with his pace and dribbling skills.“I’m not surprised [about his development], I know him, and I know his way of playing football,” Solari said on Vinicius.“It’s amazing that a boy of 18 years of age is progressing the way he is. Some credit also has to go to his team-mates, who support him and allow him to play.”La Liga Betting: Match-day 4 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Despite it being very early into La Liga season, both Barcelona and Real Madrid have had unprecedented starts to their campaigns. With this in…As for the match itself at Camp Nou, Lucas Vazquez had given Real a sixth-minute lead before Malcom smashed in an equaliser for Barcelona to settle the game at 1-1 at Camp Nou.Solari added: “It was a beautiful game, with real quality and regular shifts in momentum. It was great to watch for all the fans of any club.“We had chances to score in both halves, with Vinicius Junior’s effort or Gareth Bale’s attempt. It’s hard to talk about justice in football.“Making comparisons is pointless. This game is confirmation that this group of players is working very well. It’s an open-ended result, there’s a lot of quality out on the pitch and anything can happen at any time.”The return leg between Real Madrid and Barcelona will take place on February 27 at the Santiago Bernabeu.🏁 FT: @FCBarcelona 1-1 @realmadrid⚽ Malcom 57′; @Lucasvazquez91 6’#Emirates | #RMClasico pic.twitter.com/ms5nPlnPdE— Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) February 6, 2019
The change will affect devices running Android 7 and up, which accounts for half of all Android users. James Martin/CNET Your Android passwords could one day go the way of the floppy disk. Google and the Fast Identity Online Alliance said Monday that Android is now FIDO2-certified, meaning its devices can use fingerprints and security keys for logging in to accounts instead of passwords. The certification was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. The change will only affect devices running Android 7 and up, which accounts for half of all Android users. Nothing is needed for the billion Android devices to get the added security. It’ll be available out of the box or with an automatic Google Play Services update, the FIDO Alliance said.Using fingerprints or security keys as passwords was already available for a handful of apps on Android, primarily for banking and other financial services. The change opens security features to any Android developer, allowing for password-less logins on the operating system’s mobile browser and apps.Passwords are the keys to your digital lives, allowing access to accounts managing your finances, your social life and more. The problem is, they aren’t very secure gatekeeper because hackers can easily steal your credentials and sell them in data dumps. They’re even more ineffective if you use the same password for multiple accounts, as highlighted by reports that TurboTax account information was accessed using passwords from other accounts. Unlike passwords, fingerprints and security keys are much harder to steal online, and with the FIDO2 standard, they’re protected against phishing attacks. “With this news from Google, the number of users with FIDO Authentication capabilities has grown dramatically and decisively,” Brett McDowell, executive director of the FIDO Alliance, said in a statement. “Together with the leading web browsers that are already FIDO2 compliant, now is the time for website developers to free their users from the risk and hassle of passwords and integrate FIDO Authentication today.”Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox already support the FIDO2 standard. The security standard checks when you log in to make sure it’s the real page and not a fake site designed to fool you. Hackers frequently spoof pages as Google showcased several fake support pages that looked identical to the real ones. In a 2016 survey from TeleSign, the security company found that 72 percent of companies plan to stop using passwords in the next 10 years, moving to biometrics and two-factor authentication. It’s the same vision for Google, which created its own security key in July, and experts believe fingerprints are the most popular replacement for passwords. Ashraf HossainAshraf Hossain is a living legend in Jessore’s Chaugacha upazila, helping the people in his area to avail the Right to Information (RTI) act. Ashraf approaches various departments of government organisations for information and provides this information to people who need assistance. Thus he tries to render government and private organisations accountable.Abdul Jabbar needed help from Ashraf Hossain. He is a day labourer of Boro Gobindapur in Jessore’s Chaugacha upazila. He cut his hand while on the job and rushed to hospital on Saturday. Jabbar’s brother called Ashraf and Ashraf called the Chaugacha health complex’s authorities.Ashraf’s call made the hospital authorities provide Jabbar their best treatment.Jabbar told Prothom Alo, “The doctor took time and care to stitch my hand. I would not get the best treatment if Ashraf uncle had not called them”.Ramzan Ali from the village Laskarpur has been facing inordinate delays in registering land at the upazila land office. Ashraf Hossain sent him to an official and the work was done within a few days.Ramzan said, “Without Ashraf’s help I would have faced more hassle”.Ashraf Hossain, 50, lives with his wife and two children in Jamlata village of the upazila. And eighth grade drop-out Ashraf, is a timber trader.Ashraf always protested against any irregularities, corruption, and unlawful activities around him since his childhood. Now he fights against the corrupt with proof. He even provides the proof and information to the media.Ashraf Hossain applies for necessary information to different government departments, using RTI. He asks for information if he hears of any irregularities or corruption. He complains to the information commission if any official refuses to provide him with the necessary information.Ashraf, so far, has submitted application 26 times to various government departments under the RTI act. He received 18 sets of information on time, four after approaching the information commission and four are being processed.Ashraf was harvesting rice with his son in the field near home when the Prothom Alo correspondent visited him.Ashraf said, a private development organisation MRDI arranged a training camp on the RTI act in it office at Shinghajhuli union parishad in 2015. The seven-day camp was organised by Manusher Jonno Foundation.”I came to know that according to the law every citizen has the right to any information from the authorities. After the training ended, I started to seek information from different departments of the government offices” he added. Ashraf said, Chaugacha upazila health complex, Chaugacha Upazila Education Office, Chaugacha Juba Unnayan Office and Shishu Niloy Foundation refused to provide him with information.Shishu Niloy Foundation did not even accept his application and an official even insulted him. He complained against the foundation and three government offices to the information commission.Ashraf said the officers apologised and provided him with the information he asked for later on.Now his applications are under process in Chaugacha Primary Education office, Dhuliani UP, the office of Jessore district civil surgeon and Chaugacha Rural Electrification office.According to Ashraf, the RTI act is a great initiative as it renders various organisations accountable. But he had been threatened too, while trying to avail information. His wife, Taslima Khatun said, “My husband helps people, I am happy about that. But sometimes he has to face threats to his life. I am worried about him” Ashraf’s initiative to ask for information is the talk of the town. Following his footsteps, Jahangir Alam, a Singapore migrant from Ujirpur village, Abu Kalam, Dablu Mia from Muktarpur and Nawab Ali from Fatehpur sought information from various offices under the RTI act.Sukumar Das, the acting president of TIB’s Shocheton Nagorik Committee in Jessore said, “This is certainly a positive initiative by Ashraf Ali. Being inspired, many others are seeking information from different offices.”Earlier, Ashraf applied for lists of free medicines provided by the government and the register book that contained the patient lists provided with the medicines from January to September on 26 August in 2015. He applied to the Jessore civil surgeon’s office on 7 October. They did not provide him with any information.Ashraf then complained to the information commission and the commission ordered them to provide him with the necessary information within 15 days. After that, the patients started to receive free medication and treatment at the Upazila Health Complex.A patient at the health complex, Shahar Banu said, “I have been admitted into the hospital for 10 days. I got all the medicines for free.”Ashraf applied to the Chaugacha upazila education officer for a copy of the student-list who get the stipend and government allocations in Garibpur primary school. There have been no irregularities in distribution of stipend since then. ASM Kabir Hossain, the senior information officer of Jessore district said, “Every citizen has the right to information from any department. Ashraf Hossain is seeking information using RTI act which is a very positive initiative”.Shaheen Anam, the executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation, said the RTI act was introduced with the purpose to establish good governance. “We can achieve the goal if the public starts to use the act” he added.Shaheen again said, “It is sad that rural people are using the RTI act more than urban ones. We need to work on this to change the scene”.*The article originally published in Prothom Alo print edition has been rewritten in English by Farjana Liakat.

APFILE – This May 20, 2018 file photo shows steam rising as lava flows into the ocean near Pahoa, Hawaii. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong, file)White plumes of acid and extremely fine shards of glass billowed into the sky over Hawaii as molten rock from Kilauea volcano poured into the ocean, creating yet another hazard from an eruption that began more than two weeks ago: A toxic steam cloud.Authorities on Sunday warned the public to stay away the cloud that formed by a chemical reaction when lava touched seawater.Further upslope, lava continued gushing out of large cracks in the ground in residential neighborhoods in a rural part of the Big Island. The molten rock made rivers that bisected forests and farms as it meandered toward the coast. The rate of sulfur dioxide gas shooting from the ground fissures tripled, leading Hawaii County to repeat warnings about air quality. At the volcano’s summit, two explosive eruptions unleashed clouds of ash. Winds carried much of it toward the southwest.Joseph Kekedi, an orchid grower who lives and works about 3 miles (5 kilometers) from where lava dropped into the sea, said the flow luckily did not head toward him. At one point, it was about a mile (asterisk)1.6 kilometers) upslope from his property in the coastal community of Kapoho.Residents can only stay informed and be ready to get out of the way, he said.“Here’s nature reminding us again who’s boss,” Kekedi said.Scientists said the steam clouds at the spots where lava entered the ocean were laced with hydrochloric acid and fine glass particles that can irritate skin and eyes and cause breathing problems. The lava haze called “laze” from the plume spread as far as 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of where the lava met the ocean on the Big Island’s southern coast. It was just offshore and running parallel to the coast, said U.S. Geological Survey scientist Wendy Stovall.Scientists said the acid in the plume was about as corrosive as diluted battery acid. The glass was in the form of fine glass shards. Getting hit by it might feel like being sprinkled with glitter.“If you’re feeling stinging on your skin, go inside,” Stovall said. Authorities warned that the plume could shift direction if the winds changed. The Coast Guard said it was enforcing a safety zone extending 984 feet (300 meters) around the ocean entry point.Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. John Bannon said in a statement Sunday that “getting too close to the lava can result in serious injury or death.”Gov. David Ige told reporters in Hilo that the state was monitoring the volcano and keeping people safe.“Like typical eruptions and lava flows, it’s really allowing Madam Pele to run its course,” he said, referring to the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire.Ige said he was thankful that the current lava flows did not pose a threat to homes and hoped it would stay that way.On Saturday, the eruption claimed its first major injury when a man was struck in the leg by a flying piece of lava.David Mace, a spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management Agency who was helping Hawaii County respond to the disaster, did not have further details about the man’s injuries or his condition.Kilauea has burned some 40 structures, including two dozen homes, since it began erupting in people’s backyards in the Leilani Estates neighborhood on May 3. About 2,000 people have evacuated their homes, including 300 who were staying in shelters. In recent days, the lava began to move more quickly and emerge from the ground in greater volume. Scientists said that’s because the lava that first erupted was magma left over from a 1955 erupted that had been stored in the ground for the past six decades. The molten rock that began emerging over the past few days was from magma that has recently moved down the volcano’s eastern flank from one or two craters that sit further upslope — the Puu Oo crater and the summit crater. The new lava is hotter, moves faster and has spread over a wider area.Early Monday, a small eruption occurred at the Kilauea summit, producing an ash plume that reached about 7,000 feet (2,134 meters). Officials said wind carried the ash plume to the southwest, toward the communities of Wood Valley, Pahala, Naalehu and Waiohinu.Scientists have said they do not know how long the eruption will last. The volcano has opened more than 20 vents, including four that have merged into one large crack. It has been gushing lava high into the sky and sending a river of molten rock toward the ocean at about 300 yards (274 meters) per hour.Hawaii tourism officials have stressed that most of the Big Island remains unaffected by the eruption and is open for business. Until this week, sex between unmarried people in Utah was technically illegal, a vestige of earlier times. That changed Wednesday, when Gov. Gary Herbert signed a bill that decriminalizes sex outside of marriage in the state, spokesperson Anna Lehnardt tells NPR.Utah’s 1973 fornication law designated sex outside of marriage as a class B misdemeanor. The act carried a possible penalty of up to six months in jail or a maximum fine of $1,000. Utah was among only a few states that retained these laws. State Senate Minority Leader Karen Mayne sponsored the bill and tells NPR that it was just a small piece in Utah’s criminal code that needed to be revamped. “You hear all over the U.S. how you have antiquated laws about horses in the streets and all kinds of things, so we wanted to make them modern-day, in the now,” Mayne says. The measure also modifies criminal offenses. State Rep. Paul Ray called the 1973 fornication law unenforceable, according to The Associated Press. But some lawmakers did not want it repealed on moral grounds. “Personally I don’t know if anyone ever worried about this,” Emily Anderson, a senior at the University of Utah and the editor-in-chief of its newspaper, The Daily Utah Chronicle, tells NPR. The fornication law was really just something that people joked about in class and on Twitter, she says. “Basically just like, ‘Oh thank God, I can do this thing I’ve always been doing.’ “The law had not been prosecuted for years, according to a Utah website covering policy. In a 1991 Deseret News report, an unmarried woman was quoted as saying she had “real concrete fear of criminal prosecution” for breaking the fornication law. “I am aware that last year another person in Salt Lake County was criminally prosecuted for such conduct,” she said in a lawsuit filed that year. Campaigners from across the country gathered outside parliament this week to call for an end to unsafe “shared space” street designs, which risk turning public spaces into “no go zones” for many disabled and older people. The protest (pictured) was organised by the National Federation of the Blind of the UK (NFBUK), and attended by members of Transport for All (TfA), and campaigners from Save Our Green Lanes, Enfield Town Residents Association and East Dunbartonshire Visually Impaired People’s Forum. They were joined by Michael Pringle, whose three-year-old son Clinton was killed after he was hit by a vehicle in a shared space scheme while on holiday in Jersey last year.Protesters later delivered a letter to the prime minister at Number 10, which calls for an end to all shared space street developments.Shared space schemes usually remove kerbs and controlled crossings, encouraging vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists to share the same space, but posing greater risks for partially-sighted and blind people, as well as other disabled people, including many of those with mobility impairments, learning difficulties or who are deaf. The NFBUK letter also calls for standard height kerbs and controlled crossings to be retained in all street schemes; an audit of all existing shared space developments, and for them to be made “accessible for all”; and for the current shared space guidance to be replaced with an “inclusive design approach”.TfA member Kasia Kubaszek, a guide dog-user from Hammersmith, west London, who attended this week’s protest, said she wanted an end to spared space developments. On one occasion, she was walking to the Albert Hall along Exhibition Road, a shared space scheme, and had to ask a stranger to walk with her because she felt so frightened. She said: “I felt terrified. I felt as though I was walking in the middle of the road, but I wasn’t.“I don’t think I would do it again unless I really, really had to. At any point, I felt as if a car could drive into me.“Even when I think about it now it makes me feel so anxious.”On another occasion, her guide dog Carrie was walking with her along High Street Kensington – another shared space scheme – and because there was no kerb she led her in front of a car, which fortunately stopped before it hit them.Karl Farrell, from Hackney, north London, who also took part in the protest, and is a member of both NFBUK and TfA, said that shared space areas produced “an unequal contest” between cars and pedestrians, particularly if the pedestrian was blind. He said: “Losing controlled crossings… these crossings are important because you know where you stand with them, you know what your position is, and you proceed to cross when you have the right of way.”But with shared space-type “courtesy crossings”, he often has no idea when to cross, because cars can be very quiet, as are cycles. He said: “In that situation, I might be stepping out into danger.”Earlier this summer, five NFBUK members hand-delivered a letter to the prime minister to ask for an independent inquiry into shared space developments “in order to regain the rights of residents to walk their town streets once again without needing to negotiate right-of-way with drivers of moving vehicles by sight, a task which is impossible for blind and vision-impaired people to carry out”.Catherine Smith, TfA’s campaigns and outreach officer, said: “We’ve heard from countless disabled and older people who are afraid to walk through shared spaces.“The government must act to stop our public spaces from becoming no go zones for disabled and older people.”Last month, the Department for Transport’s draft transport accessibility action plan – which is out for consultation – said the department was working with the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on a review of shared space and other street design projects, which aims “to provide clarity on how such schemes should be designed and developed”.The action plan says the review should “reinforce to designers that improving inclusivity is not just one of many objectives for a scheme, but must be embedded within the process”.DfT says in the draft plan that it will “consider the need to revise guidance in the light of those recommendations”.

Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brand –shares Snapchat Now Lets You Spy on Friends’ Locations Bored Snapchat users looking for something to do should update their apps today: they’ll be greeted with a new map view that shows where exactly their friends are and what they’re up to.Snap Map, as the company is calling it, can be activated by pinching your fingers together on the camera view when you first start the app. Once in map view, you’ll see “Actionmoji” versions of your nearby friends, which include their names and profile photos in a configuration that vaguely resembles the tags you might find on plants for sale at the nursery. When you tap on one of your friends’ icons, you’ll see stories they’ve posted recently, which might get you in the mood to go join in the fun they’re having. You’ll only see your friends on the map if they’ve recently opened their Snapchat map and have shared their location with you. Conversely, you can decide who can see your location on their maps, choosing from all your friends or a customized list. You can also browse the map in “Ghost Mode” without broadcasting your location to anyone. What if none of your friends are around or they haven’t posted anything interesting recently? Not to worry: the map view will also show a heat map based on the activity of other Snapchat users. For example, a map of San Francisco shows hot spots at Fisherman’s wharf and along Market Street. You can also zoom out to view events that Snapchat selects from around the country or the world, such a baseball game or current events like Tuesday’s special election in Georgia. The Snap Map is Snapchat’s take on the location-based social media genre, which already includes startups like Zenly that are designed to let you keep track of nearby friends. And given Instagram’s propensity to successfully duplicate Snapchat features, it also wouldn’t be surprising if Instagram copies the map idea in the near future. Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Add to Queue Internet pioneer Marc Andreessen said that Mt. Gox “had to die,” and it officially just did. After a rocky few weeks practically sputtering on life support, the troubled Bitcoin trading exchange, once most robust in the world, filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo District Court today.CEO Mark Karpeles blamed hackers for his company’s demise, saying they exploited a “weakness” in Mt. Gox’s computer system that enabled them to pilfer almost half a billion U.S. dollars worth of the digital currency. Karpeles, like Andreessen and scores of fellow Bitcoin defenders, says he still expects the controversial unregulated virtual currency to grow and thrive, even as his exchange pulls the plug on itself. Related: Bitcoin Exchange Mt. Gox Apologizes About Crippling Hack, Says Withdrawals to Resume Soon”First of all, I’m very sorry,” he said. “The bitcoin industry is healthy and it is growing. It will continue, and reducing the impact is the most important point.”Mt. Gox, which claimed for a time that it oversaw approximately 80 percent of all dollar-for-Bitcoin trades across the globe, said it discovered on Feb. 24 that 750,000 of its customers’ bitcoins were missing, along with 100,000 of its own. That adds up to about $480 million total, approximately 7 percent of the estimated total of bitcoins in existence. The company halted customer withdrawals on Feb. 7 and later wiped out the contents of its website and Twitter feed, sparking accusations of insolvency and rocking the Bitcoin trading community worldwide.Related: Bitcoin Advocate Andreessen: ‘Mt. Federal prosecutors in New York subpoenaed the trading platform this earlier this month.Meanwhile, as of 9:56 a.m. ET, Bitcoin prices hit $561.24, according to the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index. Explore further The future of renewable infrastructure is uncertain without good planning Why do people oppose these projects? One of the reasons is that stakeholders—local, regional and national governments, industry, environmental organizations and local residents—often feel their views and concerns aren’t being considered. To address the problem, the EU-funded project INSPIRE-GRID created several tools that allow all voices to be heard in the grid expansion planning and approval process. The project’s solution for increased stakeholder engagement has the potential to enable better conflict management and an expedited permit process.Tools for information and collaborationThe project team’s challenge was to help citizens provide informed opinions on complex matters by finding ways to bridge the information gap between power grid experts and the general public. Their solution to this challenge was to combine methods that facilitate decision-making with state-of-the-art tools that facilitate collaboration between all stakeholders. One of these tools, the geographic information system (GIS) web interface, makes it possible for local residents to visualize a power line’s possible routes and submit their views on them. A GIS was used in the planning of Swiss transmission line paths and of a power line transmitting wind-generated energy from the north to the south of Germany.Other INSPIRE-GRID tools deal with the difficulty of communicating a project’s expected benefits, which may not always be easily visible at local level. The project’s life-cycle assessment tool helps stakeholders to see the environmental impacts of future power lines. It also explains the reasons why a grid extension may be needed, for example to link renewable energy to the system or to reduce power interruptions and blackouts. Since the project’s end in 2017, such tools have already been used in a real-world environment. An INSPIRE-GRID (Improved and eNhanced Stakeholders Participation In Reinforcement of Electricity Grid) poster published on the ResearchGate website provides some promising conclusions about stakeholder engagement in future grid expansion projects. They state that “[e]arly, fair and trustworthy involvement of stakeholders can increase acceptance” of new grid projects. They also mention “careful selection of stakeholder engagement methods” and the use of “participatory decision-making methods to generate more inclusive decisions” as important factors to be considered. One thing is for sure, using these methods can only be a positive stepping stone to a more energy-efficient and low-carbon economy. Citation: Novel tools bridge the information gap between citizens and electricity grid operators (2019, June 6) retrieved 17 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2019-06-tools-bridge-gap-citizens-electricity.html It’s generally agreed that a low-carbon economy is important if we’re to combat climate change. One obvious way to do this is to modernize our current power transmission grids so that we can make electricity more secure, affordable and sustainable. However, while this may seem straightforward in theory, in reality things aren’t always so simple. New grid projects often face strong opposition by the organizations and communities they affect. When such opposition is added to the lengthy process of obtaining the necessary permits that can last up to 10 years, many of these projects are delayed or even canceled.
