Branding of Vukovar through urban visual identity

first_imgThis year, too, a street art festival called will be held in Vukovar VUKOVART – goes vertical! co-organized by Vala kulture and the City of Vukovar, as a continuation of last year’s international event VUKOVART – Port of Art 2017. At several locations in Borovo naselje, the facades of buildings will be painted with murals world-famous street artists. Also, after a great collaboration s Planet Street Painting as a co-organizer, this year he is changing that role Val culture. The main goal of the project is to change the image of the city of Vukovar and put it on the maps of European and world contemporary art that will be recognized in Croatia and in the European Union, and finally the world, and last year is proof that the organizers succeeded. The festival will host the most successful artists from the world street art scene, and visitors will be able to observe the creative processes of muralists: Marine Capdevile from Spain, Rickey Lee Gordon from South Africa, Vere Bugatti i Fabia Fedelea from Italy, Elle & Pitra from France and two Croatian artists, Cheza and Sarma. The artists will paint the facades in Borovo naselje and the program will be accompanied by musical performances. The concert of General Woo on the Vukovar promenade is also expected. The festival is also intended for families with children, so the youngest creatives will be able to participate in children’s program “Chalk 2 ” and to announce fresh competition with world artists. The workshop will be led by Filip Mrvelj, who will refresh or restore his 3D image on the Vukovar bridge. The rich program will be completed by the screening of the film “First Journey” by Filip Mrvelj and Krešimir Herceg, which shows a 1000-kilometer long bike ride to the festival where Filip Mrvelj painted a picture of the connection between Croatia and France. The Vukovart Festival realizes the original idea of the organizers to make Vukovar an open-air museum with its new attractive visual identity. The 3D images attract many tourists who come to this city on the Danube every day on cruises. In this way, Vukovar creates a new concept of branding the city by merging the archaeological, cultural and historical heritage with a new urban identity, modeled on famous European destinations such as Berlin. The result of this whole tourist story is that 3D graffiti certainly generated new added value in the tourist offer of Vukovar, and in combination with the rest of the cultural offer if it is combined into a complete tourist product, they can be an excellent new tourist product of Vukovar. This festival promotes Vukovar as a place that accepts all artists, ie creators of new values. Also, this concept changes the visual identity of the city and makes it a more beautiful place to live, but also in a way that the painted areas are an attraction for more and more tourists who come. It is a project that proves that we are systematically working on a continuous tourist offer and that Vukovar is opening up to various tourist interests. On the one hand, by renovating the facades and painting public areas, Vukovar is becoming a more pleasant place to live, while on the other hand, this festival creates a unique tourist attraction that is interesting to both locals and foreign tourists. This is another proof of how the enthusiasm of an individual can contribute to a new added value of the tourist and cultural offer of the city. This event is slowly becoming a new tourist product that can result in the motive of tourist arrivals of visitors to Croatia and even Europe. Yes, you can make a great tourist story out of “nothing”, but nothing goes overnight without the will and long-term work, recognizing the opportunity of the city administration, investing in a better tomorrow and the effort and synergy of all participants. And don’t forget, investing in events is not a cost, but an investment. An investment that in a couple of years will become a motive for coming and generate tourist consumption that is dispersed vertically and horizontally to other industries. That is the greatest power of tourism.Visit Vukovar from May 29 to June 10 and have a new experience – VukovART, port of artlast_img read more

Apps and websites help air passengers get compensation for flight problems

first_imgMONTREAL – Airline passengers who use social media to vent their rage at being stuck on a tarmac for hours or waiting days for their luggage to arrive may get some apologetic words from the company, but are unlikely to recoup any money for their efforts. That’s because the percentage of Canadians who actually apply to airlines for compensation is in the single digits, something that Jacob Charbonneau hopes to change. The former airline employee is co-founder and CEO of Flight Claim, a Quebec-based company that has helped passengers reclaim $1.5 million in compensation for flight delays, cancellation, lost baggage and overbooking since starting less than two years ago.Charbonneau saw the service’s potential after helping a colleague fight an airline over a $900 claim.“I didn’t find that it was fair that people weren’t able to get the compensation only because they’re not aware of their rights or they’re not aware of how to get that compensation,” he said in an interview. There is plenty of untapped potential because less than five per cent of Canadian passengers bother to file claims for compensation, Charbonneau said. With Flight Claim, passengers complete an online form and leave the company to handle the rest. There’s no fee, but the company gets paid 25 per cent of the award if it is successful.A similar business model is used by a myriad of competitors that operate abroad under names such as Weclaim, Green Claim, Refund.me, EUclaim and Flightright. While airlines are getting better at managing their fleet, a five per cent annual growth of passengers is straining airports, airlines and air traffic controllers, resulting in more delays, cancellations, and the odds of getting bumped, according to Henrik Zillmer, founder of AirHelp, which offers a service similar to Flight Claim. It also takes a 25 per cent commission.Only 15 per cent of global passengers obtain compensation, leaving 85 per cent high and dry, he said.“It’s very much a secret that the airlines have kept from you that we are now trying to tell all air passengers,” he said from New York City. The company says it has helped more than 20,000 Canadians who stumbled upon the service even though it only formally launched in Canada last month.Customers can allow AirHelp to link with their email to automatically monitor if they are entitled to any compensation on flights they have taken.AirHelp sometimes steps in to sue airlines that reject refund applications knowing most passengers will give up and not attempt to force the situation by filing suit within the three-year expiry period, Zillmer said.Gabor Lukacs, founder of advocacy group Air Passenger Rights Canada, says he supports efforts to help passengers get the compensation they deserve, but he’s not confident that for-profit companies will bear the expense of helping the more challenging cases that would require litigation.“Not all companies are the same in the sense that many of them are just looking for the low hanging fruit,” said Lukacs, a mathematician who has gone to court and challenged regulator rulings in the defence of passengers. While online tools or apps can be useful, Lukacs warns passengers not to rely solely on their opinion. His group’s website offers free advice and has templates of letters that should be sent to airlines in the case of baggage claims. Its 7,000 members also offer advice based on their own experiences through its Facebook account.“We work as a community. It’s a non-profit network where we try to give people some guidance on what they’re next steps could be,” he said.Lukacs is also unconvinced that passengers will get more money from Ottawa’s proposed air passenger bill of rights because the yet-to-be-passed bill will relieve airlines from being obligated to pay compensation for maintenance issues that cause delays.“The Liberal government’s bill is going to double the amount of money passengers are not going to get.”Experts suggest that passengers who think they might be eligible for compensation keep documentation on expenses paid, ask for the reason for the flight delay or cancellation in writing, record interactions with airline staff, not accept food vouchers in lieu of claims and not trust advice from airline ground staff who are likely not familiar with the law.“In Europe, things are much easier,” Lukacs said.“But in Canada because you may be facing a high level of burden of proof, you should really document things … as meticulously as you can.”last_img read more

first_imgDAWSON CREEK, B.C. – The Peace River Regional District Board held a special meeting on Friday, August 23, to hear about the next steps for Caribou Recovery in the Peace Region.Presenting to the Board on the next steps for Caribou Recovery were Community Liaisons Blair Lekstrom and Lorne Brownsey. Also in attendance was Cassie Doyle of Environment and Climate Change Canada.Brownsey says he was appointed by Premier John Horgan to facilitate an engagement process that aims to establish a pathway to conclude the Caribou Recovery agreements and in a manner that reflects the concerns of all community members. According to Brownsey, they have two goals that focus on the recovery of caribou and ensuring the success of the affected communities, while also maintaining a form of dialogue that will allow community members to have future input on the matter.Doyle says establishing a leadership table and a common knowledge base is important when it comes to Caribou Recovery.“That’s exactly what we were thinking through is a leadership table that would be able to oversee and provide input for the development of the Section 11 and the Partnership Agreements. I think that establishing a common knowledge base is really important to ensure that everything is known, from on the state of the caribou, on the economic analysis, and that is shared and everybody has an opportunity to question the experts that have done that work.”Lekstrom says he remains optimistic that they can develop a path forward, adding that it will take everybody at the table to form a resolution on the Caribou Recovery Program.“I remain optimistic that we can find a path forward but it will take, as it was laid out here, everybody at the table to find that resolution.”The full special meeting can be found on the Regional District’s website.last_img read more

Hillman continues to spark OSU offense

A “say hey” to Ohio State’s outfielder Dee Dee Hillman might mean more than just a greeting.Hillman compares her softball prowess to Major League legend Willie Mays.“We have the same mentality that wherever the ball is hit, I’m going to get it,” Hillman said. “That is my outfield mentality. I love to make the plays that seem to be impossible. I love the challenge.”Not only can Hillman play defense like Mays, making only one error this year, but she hits like him as well.In a two-week span from April 21 to May 2, Hillman had a .524 batting average from the leadoff position. The team went 7-1 during this stretch, including a split series over the No. 2 team in the country, Michigan.Batting first in Ohio State’s lineup is an important role, which she considers an honor.“It’s my responsibility to get everybody off to a good start and set a good tone,” Hillman said. “I think it’s my job to break the ice.”Coach Linda Kalafatis has simple expectations for her leadoff hitter when she approaches the plate.“Get on base and challenge the defense,” Kalafatis said. Hillman’s role as the leadoff hitter is enhanced because of her ability to put the ball in play. She has only struck out 12 times all season.“It comes down to being relentless and knowing that (the pitcher) is not going to get me out,” Hillman said.Though Kalafatis has simple expectations, Hillman has had to work hard to fulfill her coach’s wishes.“I know I have been putting a lot of extra work in and all the extra swings in the (batting) cages is really starting to pay off,” Hillman said.Hillman’s work ethic spotlights her versatility. She is the only player listed on the roster as a switch hitter. “I switched over from a righty hitter to a lefty when I was about 14 and it has its advantages,” Hillman said. “The fact that you are two steps closer to first base is really huge. Another advantage is that you can mis-hit and still beat it out.”As the junior’s confidence has been increasing with every game, she has made big strides compared to last year.In 2009, Hillman hit .297, whereas this season she is second on the team with a .361 batting average. Her big strides are evident in the batter’s box, but much shorter on the base paths. Hillman led the team last year with 17 stolen bases. This season, she only has five. One reason Hillman has not been able to “run like Mays” is because of a lingering hamstring injury, but her coach believes there is a bit more strategy to worry about.“We don’t want to open up first base and invite teams to walk Sam Marder,” Kalafatis said. “We don’t want to open the base up.”As the regional tournament approaches, Hillman is already looking to change up her game for next year.“As I am getting older, other teams start to know you a little bit better and start to scout you more.” Hillman said. “So, if it comes to bunting or just working more on power-slapping to hit it more in the gaps, I’ll do whatever.”In the end, Kalafatis is aware of Hillman’s big goal.“She wants to be an All-American,” Kalafatis said. read more

Credit: Nick Hudak | For The LanternIn the rivalry matchup between Michigan (8-8-6, 4-4-4-2 Big Ten) and Ohio State (12-5-4, 5-2-3-2 Big Ten), a season after the Buckeyes won all five matchups, it was the Wolverines who came out on top, winning the game 2-1.Michigan junior goalie Hayden Lavigne came up big, making 22 saves, including 20 straight to end the game.“They’re a really good hockey team, they’ve got a ton of talent,” head coach Steve Rohlik said.  “They played with a lot of speed. There’s nothing that surprised me tonight.”Following the puck drop, Ohio State roared to life with senior forward Freddy Gerard scoring a goal less than seven minutes into the game with assists from junior forward Carson Meyer and senior forward Dakota Joshua. The rest of the period saw a vicious Michigan offense facing off against a resilient OSU defense.  Michigan attempted over double the amount of shots in the period, shooting 13 times as opposed to Ohio State’s six, but the Buckeyes held the 1-0 lead.Within the first two minutes of the second period, both Michigan senior defenseman Nicholas Boka and junior forward Jake Slaker were sent to the penalty box, allowing Ohio State a 5-on-3 opportunity to advance their lead.  Despite their best efforts, the puck ricocheted off the goal post twice, keeping the score at 1-0.“We had obviously a couple great looks, hit a couple posts, I mean sometimes you get those, sometimes you don’t,” Rohlik said. “We go up two-zip maybe it’s a different game, but it didn’t happen, so then you gotta respond from there.”Shortly after being released from the penalty box, Slaker tied the game up 1-1. The teams remained in a gridlock up until the last few minutes of the second period, when Michigan junior forward Will Lockwood shot and scored, putting Michigan in the lead 2-1.The Buckeyes pulled redshirt senior goalie Sean Romeo and put in an additional player within the last moments of the game in an attempt to at least tie up the game, but couldn’t find the back of the net.“We kind of played into what they like to do,” Gerard said. “They had a lot of heat coming up the ice on us and for whatever reason, we just didn’t really have the jump tonight, and we weren’t playing really connected.”Ohio State faces off with Michigan again at the Schottenstein Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday. read more
