The US Is Twice As Likely To Win The World Cup As

“Time heals all wounds” is kind of a nonsense saying when it comes to sports. If it were true, rivalries wouldn’t exist and 35-year-olds on the brink of retirement wouldn’t hang on for one last World Cup. More than half the likely starters on the U.S. and Japanese national teams in the Women’s World Cup final this Sunday were there for the agony and ecstacy — depending which team you were on — of the 2011 final game, when Japan defeated the U.S. on penalty kicks. Japan now has a chance to repeat history, and join Germany and the U.S. as the only countries to win two World Cup titles. The U.S. is looking to break its 16-year World Cup drought and secure its place in history as the greatest World Cup dynasty of all time (in either the women’s or men’s game). This championship game might not be the greatest of all time, but it’s one with a lot of still-fresh wounds, so here’s a look at how it’s shaping up.Things are more even than they seemBack in 2011, some betting lines put Japan’s chances of beating the U.S. around 28 percent, not so far from where they are this time around. Coming off a huge semifinal win over Germany, FiveThirtyEight’s model says the Americans should win 67 percent of the time, but the two teams’ performances in this World Cup have been pretty similar. Both teams have created the same number of chances (59) and scored the same number of goals (nine), despite having traveled very different paths to the final. It’s likely that goals won’t come easily for either side. The U.S. hasn’t been scored on since its opening game, and Japan has conceded only three goals in six games (one of which was an egregious keeper error). It may very well come down to who can capitalize on the few good opportunities the defense allows, and which team doesn’t miss early chances like the U.S. did in the 2011 final.A battle of two very different stylesJapan is arguably the most technical team in the world; it has had the highest pass completion percentage of any team at the World Cup (80 percent compared to the Americans’ 74 percent) and its players have touched the ball and attempted almost 1.5 times as many passes as the U.S. players. Japan plays a quick, one-and-two-touch style of soccer that is different from the styles of most teams the U.S. has faced so far. The closest comparison is probably Colombia — and the U.S. struggled a bit to win the ball back in the midfield in that game.Where the U.S. will excel against Japan is with its physicality and speed; by pressuring the defense and surprising Japan by playing the ball in behind. This is how the first U.S. goal came at the 2011 World Cup: The midfield collapsed to win the ball back, Megan Rapinoe played a long ball in behind, and Alex Morgan outran her defender and scored with just two touches. In the semifinal game against England this year, Japan struggled when the Lionesses pressured and stepped to win the ball back, and the U.S. must do the same thing if it hopes to break down Japan’s tremendous organization. The Americans are undoubtedly faster and stronger than Japan, but they’ll also need to be able to win the ball from a team that hardly loses it.Slow and steady wins the race (at least for one team)Both teams’ chances of winning didn’t change significantly throughout the tournament aside from a bump after the semifinal games; the U.S. hovered around 30 percent and Japan around 10 percent for the majority of the World Cup. Neither team looked stellar during the group stage — eyes were on Germany, France and even Brazil’s early dominance — but these are the two teams that have made it to the World Cup final.“These are two talented teams with a lot of history and rivalry, and I think it will be a classic matchup,” U.S. coach Jill Ellis said about Sunday’s final. The score in head-to-head matchups is one to one right now — one World cup victory for Japan to one Olympic gold medal for the U.S. — but everyone knows a World Cup trophy tastes sweeter than gold. read more

Dunns dismissal becomes more clear after new details arise

Then-redshirt-sophomore running back Bri’onte Dunn (25) carries the ball during the 2014 OSU Spring Game on at Ohio Stadium.Credit: Lantern file photoThe dismissal of Bri’onte Dunn from the Ohio State football team has become much more clear, as today new details arose about an alleged altercation between Dunn and a woman who is thought to be his girlfriend.Dunn, 23, was dismissed from Urban Meyer’s team on Monday for a “violation of team rules” according to the coach of the Buckeyes. First reported by 10TV, a 911 call placed by the woman early Sunday morning outlined a series of events that ended with a protection order against Dunn and his dismissal from the team. The dialer claimed Dunn had struck her, then began to choke her when she returned some time later.“He hit me the first time at 4:40. I left,” the caller told police. “Then I was just calling my friend and see if I could sleep somewhere and nobody answered. So I made a circle back around and came back here and he was still here. So I came upstairs and I said, ‘You need to leave before I call the cops.’ He saw that I had my phone out cause I was going to try to record it because this isn’t the first time that this has happened and that’s when he started going crazy.”There have been no criminal charges filed against Dunn other than the protection order.Dunn was entering his final year of eligibility with the Scarlet and Gray after graduating at the end of the 2016 Spring Semester. read more

Deshaun Thomas broad shoulders to bear Buckeyes scoring burden

Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta knew what he was getting in Deshaun Thomas. The junior forward is a scorer, but ever since Matta could remember he’s also had a bit of a loose trigger. When Thomas played in the 2009 Class 2A state championship game in his home state of Indiana, OSU’s coach was there to watch. The game’s opening tip went to Thomas who immediately threw up a deep 3-pointer. Air ball. “You haven’t seen anything yet,” Matta said to the person sitting next to him at the game. Thirty-four points and 15 boards later, Thomas’ Bishop Luers High School was hoisting the state championship trophy. Now, the same guy who hurriedly threw up an ill-advised air ball in his high school’s state championship game and admitted that he used to “chuck threes, just play to get that shot up” during his freshman year at OSU is the man who will lead the Buckeyes’ offense this season. Is Matta comfortable with that notion? “Yeah,” Matta said. “I think so.” He might not have any choice. With former forward Jared Sullinger now with the Boston Celtics and guard William Buford playing professionally in Spain, much of the night-to-night scoring load will be thrust onto Thomas’ broad shoulders. After the Buckeyes’ 2011 tournament run to the Final Four, it appeared Thomas might join his two teammates in the professional ranks. “It was close,” Thomas said of his decision. “I was thinking about it … because I had a great season so I was very close. But then I sat off in my room by myself and I made that decision myself, and I think I made a perfect decision by coming back.” His return is a big reason the Buckeyes – which are playing in what is expected to be the most difficult basketball conference in the country – are ranked No. 4 in both major preseason polls. For the Buckeyes to live up to those expectations, Thomas – who was named a first-team All-American by the Associated Press – will have to play a major role. The OSU forward showed he had the capabilities to be a major player last season, averaging 15.9 points and 5.4 rebounds for the season, and 19.2 points in the NCAA Tournament. Most of his production though, came with the defense focused on Sullinger, giving Thomas a little more freedom. As the only returning Buckeye to average more than nine points per game, the ire of opposing defenses will be fixed upon Thomas. “I’m pretty sure in the Big Ten it will be different,” Thomas said. “I seen how they played Jared last year and I think this year I’ll probably get some of that.” To prepare him, Thomas’ teammates tried to simulate the added defensive pressure he’ll face during summer workouts. His teammates employed double teams, triple teams and traps in scrimmages, and tried to make things as difficult as possible for him on the offensive end. “That’s going to help us big during the season when he realizes that guys are keying in on him,” said junior guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. “It’s not going to phase him because he’s going to be so used to it from our open gyms that he’s not going to think twice.” How did Thomas deal with the added pressure? “Believe it or not, there’s two people guarding him, pulling on his jersey and he still scores the ball,” Smith said. “I mean, I don’t doubt him.” His coach doesn’t either. Matta said Thomas has reined in his free-shooting ways and has turned into a more complete basketball player. “When he came in here as a freshman, if you weren’t sitting on the rim he couldn’t see you when he caught the ball,” Matta said. “He’s added a lot of different things to his game and his basketball IQ just continues to expand. “He’s making himself a complete player.” Thomas and OSU are set to tip off their season Friday against Marquette as part of the Carrier Classic on board the USS Yorktown in Charleston, S.C. Tip is set for 7 p.m. read more

Criminal complaint against BJP leader Gautam Gambhir for allegedly holding 2 voter

first_imgBJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from East Delhi, Gautam Gambhir addresses a press conference in New Delhi, on April 25, 2019.IANSGautam Gambhir, former cricketer and one of Bharatiya Janata Party’s latest members, found himself in hot water after his AAP rival Atishi accused him of possessing two voter ID cards.Atishi brought the matter to light when she tweeted on April 26 that Gambhir possessed a voter ID for Karol Bagh as well as Rajinder Nagar. She has even filed a criminal complaint. In another tweet, she wrote, “Under Section 17, read with Section 31, false declaration in the matter of electoral rolls is punishable with jail time of up to one year.”If Gambhir is found guilty, he could face a jail sentence of one year. The complaint was filed at the Tis Hazari court in Delhi.Atishi had tweeted, “I have filed a criminal complaint against the BJP candidate from East Delhi Gautam Gambhir over his possession of two voter IDs in two separate constituencies of Delhi, Karol Bagh and Rajinder Nagar. #GambhirApradh.” TwitterIn her complaint, she also demanded the immediate disqualification of the cricketer-turned-politician. In addition to this, AAP president and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted to the Delhi voters saying that there is no point in voting for a leader who is soon to be disqualified.According to News18, Gambhir rubbished the claims stating “First they make allegations, then go to court and then they apologise.” Gambhir has been in the eye of the fire ever since he joined the BJP in March and was fielded from the East Delhi constituency.Earlier this week, both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party had called for the disqualification of Gambhir over an alleged problem in his nomination papers. However, their claims were rubbished by the polling officer who said that there is “substantial compliance” in his papers and his nomination will be accepted, reports NDTV.Gambhir’s nomination exposed the fact that he is the richest candidate to be fielded in Delhi with Rs 147 crore worth of movable and immovable assets.last_img read more

Black Film Comes to DC

first_imgBy Nyame-Kye Kondo, Special to the AFROThe D.C. Black Film industry is on a steady incline. In the last two years, big advancements have been made to enrich African-American cinematic culture in the nation’s capitol; 2017 was especially important because it was the inaugural year of the DC Black Film Festival. A groundbreaking media platform, the DC Black Film festival is helping to reshape Black cinema along with the African-American film festival that will be taking place at various Smithsonian locations this fall. The first of its kind in the District, the DC Black Film Festival’s mission is to provide people of the African diaspora with a new resource to express themselves, and to ultimately get their work recognized on larger media platforms. The DC Black Film Festival is important because it gives D.C.’s own filmmakers a chance to interact and engage with other Black filmmakers from all over the country, while also setting a new standard for Black film in the District of Columbia.“Boom For Real” is a new film featured in the Smithsonian African American Film Festival. (Courtesy Photo)When interviewed for DCist, DC Black Film Festival founder Kevin Sampson said, “We only get a certain amount of films each year led by an African American. I realized there are a lot of screenwriters and directors out there trying to do the work—but they don’t have the accessibility.”Initially attempting to raise funds for an independent film on the lack of diversity in 2014, Sampson switched gears and decided to provide an answer to the problem. Three years later the DC Black Film Festival had its first event.  With this year’s festival featuring films like “United Skates,” which documents the resurgence of skate culture in different Black communities, as well as the festival’s local pick “Odyssey: A Web Series,” the festival is paving its own way.In its inaugural year is the Smithsonian African American Film Festival, which will be taking place this fall at a slew of Smithsonian locations throughout the District. An international platform, the launch of the Smithsonian African American Film Festival is a welcomed surprise to many because it provides filmmakers and film enthusiasts with a second experience of cinematic excellence to look forward to in one year.Juxtaposing themes within the museum with those featured in the films, the focus is on these three themes; 1) Making a way out of no way, 2) Power of place and 3) cultural expressions.  Featuring films like the highly acclaimed “Boom for Real” which documents the teenage years of the art legend Jean-Michel Basquiat, as well “Copper,” which explores death from a gender perspective, the Smithsonian African American Festival is giving Black filmmakers the opportunity to both curate and abstract the Black experience. While different in presentation and packaging, both festivals are important in making strides in the film industry  as they both seek to create new opportunities for the Black voice to be recognized and properly represented moving forward.last_img read more

Startup has plans for power plants in sky with drones

first_img(Phys.org) —Here is the idea: flying power plants in the sky as a means of providing clean, renewable energy. Here is more of the idea: this would be a high-altitude aerial power plant that harvests energy from solar, wind and other sources, and beams it wirelessly to the ground. Now the idea gets more interesting: The power plant would be using networks of unmanned drones. The company is New Wave Energy UK, formed in 2012, self-described as “an upcoming energy provider within the UK currently working towards researching and constructing our own novel form of power plant.” (New Wave Energy UK is not associated or affiliated with US-based New Wave Energy Corp.) In the November 15 press release, the company said it was seeking further investment to advance the project. New Wave Energy UK is turning to crowdfunding as one such step. “To raise such equity New Wave Energy UK Ltd are hoping to raise £300,000 through crowd funding on Kickstarter. New Wave Energy UK Ltd also intend to acquire a total of £32 million from private investors during the crucial stages of the project to commercialise the application.” In a November 15 press release, the company announced that “A new and exciting venture into a whole new form of power plant is currently in incubation within the UK.” The company said the “patent pending technology” is a drone-based power plant for combined solar, wind, heat and emerging new forms of energy generation. The technology is to incorporate wireless power transmission from the drones (and their wireless network) to the Earth’s surface,” according to the release.Details about the drone are in a recent Gizmag article on New Wave Energy UK. According to the article, the company’s ambition is for each drone to have four rotors, multiple wind turbines and a flat base for generating solar power. With energy harvested, the devices will power themselves and also 50 kW more that can be transmitted wirelessly to the ground. Rectenna arrays installed inland or on offshore installations would receive electromagnetic waves and convert them into usable power. According to New Wave Energy, “The technology is tailored to operate at 50,000 ft where wind patterns are more reliable, solar production is greater and there is little or no interference from weather patterns.” More information: www.newwaveenergyuk.com/ ;www.newwaveenergyuk.com/upload … se_november_2013.pdf Explore further Citation: Startup has plans for power plants in sky with drones (2013, December 1) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2013-12-startup-power-sky-drones.html NREL calculates emissions and costs of power plant cycling necessary for increased wind and solar © 2013 Phys.org This document is subject to copyright. The Anadi Cabin, known for its lip smacking Moglai Paratha, will be closed for four days sometime by the end of this week. Regal Cinema and the Shalimar Hotel will also be closed for a few days when tunnel-boring machines will cut underneath the buildings. “The last lap of the tunneling from Esplanade to Sealdah will require around 14 months to complete,” the official said. A similar exercise of evacuating residents and strengthening buildings had taken place when the tunnels were built along Brabourne Road as part of the project.last_img read more

Sherin Thomas explains how to build a pipeline in PyTorch for deep

first_imgA typical deep learning workflow starts with ideation and research around a problem statement, where the architectural design and model decisions come into play. Following this, the theoretical model is experimented using prototypes. This includes trying out different models or techniques, such as skip connection, or making decisions on what not to try out. PyTorch was started as a research framework by a Facebook intern, and now it has grown to be used as a research or prototype framework and to write an efficient model with serving modules. The PyTorch deep learning workflow is fairly equivalent to the workflow implemented by almost everyone in the industry, even for highly sophisticated implementations, with slight variations. In this article, we explain the core of ideation and planning, design and experimentation of the PyTorch deep learning workflow. This article is an excerpt from the book PyTorch Deep Learning Hands-On by Sherin Thomas and Sudhanshi Passi. This book attempts to provide an entirely practical introduction to PyTorch. This PyTorch publication has numerous examples and dynamic AI applications and demonstrates the simplicity and efficiency of the PyTorch approach to machine intelligence and deep learning. Ideation and planning Usually, in an organization, the product team comes up with a problem statement for the engineering team, to know whether they can solve it or not. This is the start of the ideation phase. However, in academia, this could be the decision phase where candidates have to find a problem for their thesis. In the ideation phase, engineers brainstorm and find the theoretical implementations that could potentially solve the problem. In addition to converting the problem statement to a theoretical solution, the ideation phase is where we decide what the data types are and what dataset we should use to build the proof of concept (POC) of the minimum viable product (MVP). Also, this is the stage where the team decides which framework to go with by analyzing the behavior of the problem statement, available implementations, available pretrained models, and so on. This stage is very common in the industry, and I have come across numerous examples where a well-planned ideation phase helped the team to roll out a reliable product on time, while a non-planned ideation phase destroyed the whole product creation. Design and experimentation The crucial part of design and experimentation lies in the dataset and the preprocessing of the dataset. For any data science project, the major timeshare is spent on data cleaning and preprocessing. Deep learning is no exception from this. Data preprocessing is one of the vital parts of building a deep learning pipeline. Usually, for a neural network to process, real-world datasets are not cleaned or formatted. Conversion to floats or integers, normalization and so on, is required before further processing. Building a data processing pipeline is also a non-trivial task, which consists of writing a lot of boilerplate code. For making it much easier, dataset builders and DataLoader pipeline packages are built into the core of PyTorch. The dataset and DataLoader classes Different types of deep learning problems require different types of datasets, and each of them might require different types of preprocessing depending on the neural network architecture we use. This is one of the core problems in deep learning pipeline building. Although the community has made the datasets for different tasks available for free, writing a preprocessing script is almost always painful. PyTorch solves this problem by giving abstract classes to write custom datasets and data loaders. The example given here is a simple dataset class to load the fizzbuzz dataset, but extending this to handle any type of dataset is fairly straightforward. PyTorch’s official documentation uses a similar approach to preprocess an image dataset before passing that to a complex convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture. A dataset class in PyTorch is a high-level abstraction that handles almost everything required by the data loaders. The custom dataset class defined by the user needs to override the __len__ and __getitem__ functions of the parent class, where __len__ is being used by the data loaders to determine the length of the dataset and __getitem__ is being used by the data loaders to get the item. The __getitem__ function expects the user to pass the index as an argument and get the item that resides on that index: from dataclasses import dataclassfrom torch.utils.data import Dataset, DataLoader@dataclass(eq=False)class FizBuzDataset(Dataset):    input_size: int    start: int = 0    end: int = 1000    def encoder(self, num):        ret = [int(i) for i in ‘{0:b}’.format(num)]        return[0] * (self.input_size – len(ret)) + ret    def __getitem__(self, idx):        x = self.encoder(idx)        if idx % 15 == 0:            y = [1,0,0,0]        elif idx % 5 ==0:            y = [0,1,0,0]        elif idx % 3 == 0:            y = [0,0,1,0]        else:            y = [0,0,0,1]        return x,y           def __len__(self):        return self.end – self.start The implementation of a custom dataset uses brand new dataclasses from Python 3.7. dataclasses help to eliminate boilerplate code for Python magic functions, such as __init__, using dynamic code generation. This needs the code to be type-hinted and that’s what the first three lines inside the class are for. You can read more about dataclasses in the official documentation of Python (https://docs.python.org/3/library/dataclasses.html). The __len__ function returns the difference between the end and start values passed to the class. In the fizzbuzz dataset, the data is generated by the program. The implementation of data generation is inside the __getitem__ function, where the class instance generates the data based on the index passed by DataLoader. PyTorch made the class abstraction as generic as possible such that the user can define what the data loader should return for each id. In this particular case, the class instance returns input and output for each index, where, input, x is the binary-encoder version of the index itself and output is the one-hot encoded output with four states. The four states represent whether the next number is a multiple of three (fizz), or a multiple of five (buzz), or a multiple of both three and five (fizzbuzz), or not a multiple of either three or five. Note: For Python newbies, the way the dataset works can be understood by looking first for the loop that loops over the integers, starting from zero to the length of the dataset (the length is returned by the __len__ function when len(object) is called). The following snippet shows the simple loop: dataset = FizBuzDataset()for i in range(len(dataset)):    x, y = dataset[i]dataloader = DataLoader(dataset, batch_size=10, shuffle=True,                     num_workers=4)for batch in dataloader:    print(batch) The DataLoader class accepts a dataset class that is inherited from torch.utils.data.Dataset. DataLoader accepts dataset and does non-trivial operations such as mini-batching, multithreading, shuffling, and so on, to fetch the data from the dataset. It accepts a dataset instance from the user and uses the sampler strategy to sample data as mini-batches. The num_worker argument decides how many parallel threads should be operating to fetch the data. This helps to avoid a CPU bottleneck so that the CPU can catch up with the GPU’s parallel operations. Data loaders allow users to specify whether to use pinned CUDA memory or not, which copies the data tensors to CUDA’s pinned memory before returning it to the user. Using pinned memory is the key to fast data transfers between devices, since the data is loaded into the pinned memory by the data loader itself, which is done by multiple cores of the CPU anyway. Most often, especially while prototyping, custom datasets might not be available for developers and in such cases, they have to rely on existing open datasets. The good thing about working on open datasets is that most of them are free from licensing burdens, and thousands of people have already tried preprocessing them, so the community will help out. PyTorch came up with utility packages for all three types of datasets with pretrained models, preprocessed datasets, and utility functions to work with these datasets. This article is about how to build a basic pipeline for deep learning development. The system we defined here is a very common/general approach that is followed by different sorts of companies, with slight changes. The benefit of starting with a generic workflow like this is that you can build a really complex workflow as your team/project grows on top of it.
