An extreme weather warning has been issued as the ‘FANI’ cyclone moves away from Sri Lanka.The Department of Meteorology said that the storm was located near latitude 14’1N, Longitude 83.9E at 08.30 a,m. as of today (1st May 2019) about 680 km northeast of Trincomalee. Wind gust of up to 70 kmph are expected in the sea areas off the coast extending fromHambanthota to Pottuvil and the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam toKankasanturai via Mannar. General public, Naval and fishing communities have been requested to be attentive about future advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology in this regard. The wind will be south-westerly and speeds will be between 35-45 kmph in the sea areas around the island.Wind speeds can increase up to 50 kmph at times. Sea areas around the islandcan be rough at times. The storm is likely to move northwestwards and thereafter recurve north-northeastwards towards the Odisha Coast, India while moving away from the island.
